Selecting a commercial EV charger manufacturer should begin with a harder question than “Which supplier has the best price?” A charging project has to work within a site’s electrical capacity, parking pattern, vehicle schedule, software environment, and expansion plans. A manufacturer that looks strong on a product page may still be unsuitable for the actual project.

We recommend treating supplier selection as an evidence exercise. Instead of asking manufacturers to describe their strengths, give them the same project requirements and see how specifically they respond.
Ask the Manufacturer to Rebuild Your Project on Paper
Start by sending each candidate a short project brief. Include the number of charging points, vehicle types, expected daily use, parking duration, available electrical capacity, installation environment, and anticipated future expansion.
Their response can reveal more than a product catalog. Suppose a logistics company needs overnight charging for 30 vehicles but has limited site capacity. A useful supplier should discuss how the proposed charging architecture fits the available power and operating schedule. Simply recommending higher-power equipment does not answer the underlying problem.
We would also ask for a proposed system configuration rather than a single model number. The response should explain charger quantity, power levels, communications, management requirements, and any assumptions made about the site.

OCPP is a good example. The Open Charge Alliance states that OCPP 2.0.1 includes improved device management, security, transaction handling, smart charging, and ISO 15118 support. However, certification covers defined functionality profiles, and not every optional capability is automatically included in every certified implementation.
Consequently, we would not accept “OCPP 2.0.1 compatible” as a sufficient answer. Ask which profiles are certified, which software version was tested, and whether the exact product being quoted is covered. The OCA maintains a searchable list of certified products that buyers can use for verification.
Put the Software Conversation on the Same Level as Hardware
A charging project can still face operational problems even when the physical equipment performs correctly. The management layer determines how operators see chargers, control sessions, receive information, and manage a growing network.
Ask the manufacturer to describe the intended connection between the charger and your chosen charging management system. Then clarify which functions are handled by the charger, which belong to the backend, and which depend on third-party software.
For a workplace installation, the requirement may be straightforward user authorization and session monitoring. A fleet operator may need coordinated charging around vehicle departure times. Those are different software requirements, even if both projects use similar charging hardware.
Security should also enter the conversation early. The OCA’s OCPP 2.0.1 certification framework separates Core functionality from optional profiles such as Advanced Security, Smart Charging, Advanced Device Management, and ISO 15118 Support.

Use the Quotation to Expose Hidden Project Risk
Once suppliers understand the project, compare their quotations line by line. Do not compare only the equipment subtotal.
Check whether each proposal clearly identifies commissioning, communications, software, accessories, installation assumptions, warranty coverage, and technical support. If an item is excluded, record it rather than assuming it will be included later.
Imagine two suppliers quote the same number of chargers. Supplier A provides a lower equipment price but leaves network integration and commissioning outside the quotation. Supplier B costs more initially but defines those responsibilities clearly. The second proposal may be easier to budget because fewer project variables remain unresolved.
We also recommend asking suppliers to identify assumptions that could change the final cost. Electrical upgrades, communications infrastructure, civil work, and site-specific installation conditions can all affect the project even when the charger itself is unchanged.
Judge the Supplier by What Happens After Delivery
Manufacturer selection should continue beyond the purchase order. Ask what happens if a charger stops communicating, needs a firmware update, or requires a replacement component.
A serious evaluation should cover warranty procedures, technical support, spare-parts arrangements, software updates, and responsibilities between the manufacturer, installer, and charging platform provider.
Request references from projects with comparable operating conditions when possible. A supplier experienced with a small workplace installation may not have the same practical experience required for a high-utilization fleet depot.
We would also clarify who owns each support responsibility. If three companies are involved in the hardware, installation, and backend platform, determine who coordinates the diagnosis when something goes wrong.
Choose the Manufacturer You Can Verify
The final decision should be based on evidence gathered throughout the evaluation, not on the most impressive presentation.
A strong commercial EV charging station proposal should connect equipment to the site’s operating requirements. A strong manufacturer should also be able to substantiate its technical claims, explain software integration, define commercial responsibilities, and provide a credible support path.
